An Appeal for Durga Puja 2011
The Bengal Club celebrated its Platinum Jubilee celebrations last year. Even though we got the approval from the Hon’ble High court to organize the Durga Puja pretty late in the day and the subsequent clearance from the regulatory authorities got delayed, we still managed to put up a good show. More important, we managed to increase our fund-raising limits and the members responded with increased efforts. We thank our sponsors, particularly our main sponsor the State Bank of India and others like Videocon, LIC, and the Saraswat Bank who stood by us like previous ears.
During the year, which coincided with one hundred and fiftieth birth anniversary of the poet Rabindranath Tagore, we increased our activities in the cultural front. We started a Rabindra Sangeet training program where our members and their children joined in good numbers. We also encouraged non-members, who were interested in the musical traditions of Tagore to join the programs. We have revived the Bengali language training program also and the same has become very popular among the local, mostly non-Bengali, population. We held a two-day festival celebrating the Tagore birth anniversary at the Rabindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi. Along with local performers from our community, artists from Shantiniketan and Kolkata also came and delighted the local audience with scintillating performances.
We continued with our sports activities by organizing football and cricket tournaments. In the current year, with the support from Mumbai Cricket Association and the Western India Football Federation, we will continue to expand our sports programs. We want to tie up with organizations that promote leadership development programs. We have ambitious plans to start with tennis programs; we also plan to install a full-fledged gym facility in the club premises this year.
Another ambitious project that we have embarked on this year is to create a common platform for the organizations that are involved in promoting the activities of our communities. There are so many of us trying to do similar activities in many spheres and it is necessary to have a mechanism of information-sharing on a continuous basis. We hope that over a period of time we should have a yearly convention where all of us meet and share our common heritage. The response that we are getting is tremendous in this regard.
Dear Patron, we, therefore, again appeal to all of you that our Club needs your support and good wishes again. Do come and join us in our celebrations of Durga and kali Puja and other club activities. And please extend to us your helping hand of financial support.
